Chile Earthquake: quake hits Robinson Crusoe Islands – updates
The earthquake measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale that has rattled Chile, killed 78 people when the tsunami hit the Robinson Crusoe Islands, according to President Michelle Bachelet.
The largest island in Chile was hit by a 3-meter high wave. The wave is heading towards Easter Island in the Pacific Ocean where evacuations are already under way.
“A village on the island is half-flooded, people have been evacuated to higher elevations,†the President added.
The quake has already devastated buildings in Santiago, which is about 320 km north of the quake's origin. Telephone and power lines in some areas have been disrupted.
